soundengineer.africa is run by Remember Live Trading and Projects (Pty) Ltd, Johannesburg, South Africa. This page says what the site collects about you, where it is kept, who else sees it, and how to have it removed. It describes the site as it is today. When the site changes, this page changes with it and the date above moves.

Watching needs no account

You can watch every video without signing in. When you only watch, we keep nothing about you in our own database. The site sets no cookie of its own, and it loads no analytics unless you have accepted them: on your first visit a bar at the bottom of the page asks, and nothing is loaded until you press Accept. If you decline, or have not yet chosen, no analytics script runs and no analytics cookie is set. Cloudflare, which hosts the site, keeps short-lived technical logs of requests so we can find faults. Those logs are kept for days, not months, and we do not use them to build profiles.

Video and thumbnails come from Bunny

Videos are hosted on Bunny Stream, a service of BunnyWay d.o.o., Slovenia. Every video page loads Bunny's player, and every video, thumbnail and preview image is fetched from Bunny's servers. That means Bunny sees your request: your IP address, your browser type, the page you came from and which video you play. Bunny counts plays, and the view counts shown on the site come from Bunny. Bunny's player also sends playback statistics back to Bunny while a video page is open. We do not receive any of this per person; we only see totals per video. Bunny's own privacy policy applies to what Bunny keeps.

If you sign in

Signing in uses your Google account. Google asks you which account to use and tells us three things: your name, your email address and, if you have one, the web address of your profile picture. We do not ask Google for anything else and we cannot see your Google password, contacts, files or mail.

We then keep, in our database:

• Your name, your email address, whether Google confirmed the address, your picture address, and the dates your account was created and last changed.
• A record that links your account to your Google account: Google's identifier for you and the permissions you granted (name, email, profile). We do not keep the sign-in tokens Google issues, so nothing in our database can be used to reach your Google account.
• One row per signed-in browser: a random session identifier, when it expires, the IP address and browser description at sign-in, and the dates it was created and last used.
• Short-lived records used during sign-in itself, deleted when they expire.
• Request counts by IP address and page, kept briefly to slow down abuse of the sign-in pages.

Today an account lets you sign in and out, choose the name shown with anything you post, on your account page, like or dislike a video, and comment on one. That display name is public wherever it appears; your email address is never shown. A like or dislike is stored as one record linking your account to the video; the number of likes is public, dislikes are counted but never shown to anyone but us, and nobody can see which videos you reacted to. A comment is stored with your account, the video, the time and the text, and is shown publicly with your display name; a new account's first comments are held until we approve one, and comments on a video may be held or turned off by us. You can edit or delete your own comments at any time, and deleting one deletes the replies to it. We may remove a comment that breaks the terms. If you report a comment, we store the report with your account, the comment, the reason you chose and any note you wrote; only the site's moderators see it, and the person you reported is not told who reported them. Deleting your account deletes your reactions, comments and reports. Saving videos is planned and not yet available. When it arrives, this page will say what it stores.

Submitting recordings is not open yet. When it opens, anyone with an account will be able to send a recording for the library, and we will keep with each submission: the account that sent it; the title, description, presenter name and category you give it; the video file itself; its size and length once it has been processed; where it is in our review and, if we do not accept it, our reason; and the dates it was sent and last changed. The file goes straight from your browser to Bunny Stream, which keeps it for us, so Bunny sees the upload the way it sees a video you watch, including your IP address. Until we publish a submission, only you and we can see it. A file larger than our size limit is refused before it uploads, going by the size your browser reports; a recording longer than our limit is deleted once Bunny has processed it; and a recording we do not accept is deleted from Bunny after 30 days. If you delete your account, your submissions stay, with the details you gave them, but are no longer linked to you. If new submissions are paused because the review queue for everyone is full, you can ask us to tell you when there is room again: we note that request against your account, send one email to your account's email address once there is room, and then delete the request. We keep no separate copy of your address for this, and deleting your account deletes the request.

Ahead of submissions, we keep a short list of people we have asked to contribute recordings: their email address, the date we added it and, if we set one, how many of their recordings may wait for review at once. We add an address to that list ourselves, sometimes before its owner has an account here, so it is ready when they sign in with it. Only we see the list. It is not linked to your account, so deleting your account does not remove it; email hello@soundengineer.africa and we will.

Cookies

If you have not accepted analytics, only signed-in people get cookies, and there are two:

• A session cookie that proves you are signed in. It holds a random identifier, nothing about you. Scripts on the page cannot read it, it is only sent over encrypted connections, and it lasts seven days from your last visit.
• A small hint cookie holding the first letter of your name, so the site can show it in the top corner without asking the server. It lasts seven days and is removed when you sign out.

While you are signing in, a short-lived cookie carries a random value that protects the sign-in from forgery. It expires within five minutes. Those three exist only to sign you in and keep you signed in, so they are set without asking. The only others are the analytics cookies described next, and they are set only if you accept them.

Analytics, only if you accept

We would like to know how the site is really used — which videos people open, where they give up, what does not work on a small screen — so we can fix it. For that we use Microsoft Clarity, a free service from Microsoft. On your first visit a bar at the bottom of the page asks you to accept or decline. Nothing from Microsoft is loaded, and no analytics cookie is set, unless you press Accept. If you decline, no request is ever made to Microsoft because of your visit.

Your choice is remembered on your own device, in your browser's storage. We do not keep it in our database, so we hold no record of who accepted and who declined. To change your mind, clear this site's stored data in your browser settings and the bar will ask again.

If you do accept, Clarity records how you use the page: mouse movement, taps, clicks, scrolling and how the page drew itself. Microsoft replays that for us as session recordings and combines it into heat maps. Anything you type into a box is hidden from those recordings and cannot be unhidden. Microsoft uses your IP address to work out roughly where you are, and sets its own cookies, including Microsoft-wide ones that Microsoft also uses for advertising on its own services. Microsoft keeps recordings for 30 days, except ones we mark as favourites and a randomly chosen sample, which it keeps for up to nine months. What we see is behaviour on this site; we are not shown your name or your email address and we do not try to match a recording to an account. Microsoft's own privacy statement governs what Microsoft does with it. You can opt out of Clarity on every site that uses it through the Digital Advertising Alliance's opt-out page, and Clarity honours the Global Privacy Control signal if your browser sends one.

Where your data is kept

The site runs on Cloudflare. Cloudflare provides the hosting, the domain's DNS, the database and email. The database's primary copy is in Western Europe, so if you sign in from anywhere in Africa your account details are stored there. Pages are served from Cloudflare locations near you. Email you send to hello@soundengineer.africa is received by Cloudflare and forwarded to a mailbox hosted by Google. We do not send email to account holders today; when sign-in by email link arrives, we will send those links from this domain through Cloudflare.

Who else sees it

Nobody, apart from the services named above doing their job: Google for sign-in, Bunny for video, Cloudflare for everything else, and Microsoft for analytics if you accepted them. We do not sell, rent or share your details, and we show no advertising.

Your data, your call

You can delete your account yourself on your account page; it asks for a recent sign-in first and cannot be undone. Deleting your account removes your name, your email address, your sign-in link to Google and your sessions from our database at once, and anything you have posted with it. To see what we hold about you or correct it, change your name on your account page or email hello@soundengineer.africa from the address on your account. You can also withdraw the site's access to your Google account at any time from your Google account's connected apps page; you will simply be signed out. We answer within a reasonable time and never charge for it.

The company is in South Africa, so the Protection of Personal Information Act applies to how we handle your details. Your own country's law may give you further rights, and we will honour reasonable requests wherever you are.
